What is Reflexology?
The ancient healing art of reflexology is thought to have been practiced around 5,000 years ago. It was reintroduced to the West in 1913 by the American ear, nose and throat specialist Dr. William Fitzgerald. Dr. Fitzgerald furthered the treatment by dividing the body into 10 equal and vertical "zones" which map out the entire body and which begin and end in the fingers and toes. Thus the whole body can be treated through the feet and hands. The body maintains "energy pathways" or "meridians" along which flows vital energy. Following a bout of illness, stress, injury or disease, the body goes into a state of imbalance and these pathways become blocked, which prevents it from functioning properly and effectively.
How Reflexology Works
Reflexology can be used to clear the blockages and restore and maintain the energy flow, thus bringing the body back to optimum health. The treatment is a pressure technique on the hands or feet. Imbalances are detected by the presence of deposits of tiny crystals, watery/spongy like areas, or lumpy congested areas. These are worked upon to remove them and thus restore a free-flow of energy to the whole body. Tension is released, circulation and elimination is improved and the body heals itself at its own pace. Reflexology treats the whole person and in addressing the physical, it then follows that the mental and emotional can balance.
During your session
You will either lie down or sit if lying isn’t possible, remaining fully clothed except for your footwear. Pressure therapy is applied to the soles and tops of your feet using specially formulated creams and oils and the session ends with a foot and lower leg massage.
